چکیده

The aim of this study was to use pulsed near infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy to determine the oxygen saturation (SO2) of a saline suspension of red blood cells in vitro. The photoacoustic measurements were made in a cuvette which formed part of a larger circuit through which the red blood cell suspension was circulated. Oxygen saturation of the red blood cell suspension was altered between 2-3% to 100% in step increments using a membrane oxygenator and at each increment an independent measurement of oxygen saturation was made using a co-oximeter. An optical parametric oscillator laser system provided nanosecond excitation pulses at a number of wavelengths in the near-infrared spectrum (740-1040nm) which were incident on the cuvette. The resulting acoustic signals were detected using a broadband (15MHz) Fabry-Perot polymer film transducer. The optical transport coefficient and amplitude were determined from the acoustic signals as a function of wavelength. These data were then used to calculate the relative concentrations of oxyand deoxyhaemoglobin, using their known specific absorption coefficients and an empirically determined wavelength dependence of optical scattering over the wavelength range investigated. From this, the oxygen saturation of the suspension was derived with an accuracy of ±5% compared to the co-oximeter SO2 measurements.

Toward High-speed Transcranial Photoacoustic Imaging using Compact Near-infrared Pulsed LED Illumination System

Quantification of brain function is a significant milestone towards understanding of the underlying workings of the brain. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is the emerging brain sensing modality by which the molecular light absorptive contrast can be non-invasively quantified from deep-lying tissue (~several cm). In this BRAIN initiative effort, we propose highspeed transcranial PA imaging using a no...

Determination of Thermo Physical Parameters of C60 Using Fourier Transform Infrared Photoacoustic Spectroscopy

The thermo physical parameters thermal effusivity (e) and thermal diffusivity (α) have been measured using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) for two different purities of C60 fullerenes (99.5 % , 98.5%) samples in the powder form. The experimental results shows that the values of thermal diffusivity is less then that obtained for crystalline C60 fullerenes. The ...

Synergy of photoacoustic and fluorescence flow cytometry of circulating cells with negative and positive contrasts.

In vivo photoacoustic (PA) and fluorescence flow cytometry were previously applied separately using pulsed and continuous wave lasers respectively, and positive contrast detection mode only. This paper introduces a real-time integration of both techniques with positive and negative contrast modes using only pulsed lasers. Various applications of this new tool are summarized, including detection...
